Anne D-N spent a little time watching what looked like a hornet on the buddleia in her garden. Checking out the identity later, she found it was in fact a Hornet Mimic Hoverfly (Volucella zonaria), and totally harmless insect that protects itself from predators by mimicking a hornet. it can be distinguished by the clear black and yellow bands on the abdomen, no narrow 'waist' between abdomen and thorax, only a single pair of wings and very stubby antennae - as can be seen in this photograph Anne took.
